When Katharina Kubrick Hobbs, a Hertfordshire-based artist, commissioned us to design a website that would show off her oil paintings in the best light, we knew that we had to produce something special. As a professional artist with strong visual ideas, Katharina was keen to play an active role in the design of her site, while our job was to interpret her ideas into a form that would load fast and work well in all browsers, in common with all of our sites.
Under the skin, the site is structurally similar to many of our other sites, including Coffee Central and Gardenia of London; this means that the navigation works seamlessly, making the site quick and easy to use. However, the stylesheet, which we designed from scratch, sets this site apart from the competition, being both highly graphical and yet very quick to load. The galleries have a sub-stylesheet, which allows them to have a slightly different visual appearance; by removing the background image and slightly darkening the canvas colour, we were able to show off the artwork to its full potential.
